A perfect gift for that special someone in your life, or a simply fabulous piece to add to your collection! Piano baby is a collector's term. About 1880, the well-decorated home had a shawl on the piano. Bisque figures of babies were designed to help hold the shawl in place. They range in size from 6 to 18 inches. Most of the figures were made in Germany. Most of the piano babies date from the early twentieth century. Here is a listing for pretty rare large sized antique figure of a lovely baby girl smiling as a beautiful butterfly is perched on her right knee. The doll gorgeously modeled & hand painted with lovely details: smiling open mouth with molded teeth showing, sculpted and molded whimsical fly-away hair, incised grey intaglio eyes that gives them a realistic dimension. The baby is unmarked and I believe she made by Conta & Boehme of Germany, early 20th century. Her posture is in a typical C & B (Conta & Boehme) pose, in a leaning position with a hand up near her face with chubby legs and curled toes. The version of this piano baby figure is on page 239 of the Conta & Boehme Porcelain Identification and Value Guide. The piano baby is approximately 10" high x 12" long x 8" wide and fairly heavy - 3.5lbs. She is in good antique condition with some wear because of her age. As you can see on the picture, on her left cheek is some discoloration, also is almost unnoticeable paint skip on the hair.
